I am from Nicaragua, but I am familiar with atoles as these traditional
drinks are used throughout Centralamerica. The atoles are recommended to the
women post partum as reconstitutive drinks, to regain their strength, put on
weight and yes, produce more milk for their babies, because their milky
appearence and the belief that if you drink milk, youŽll produce more milk.
You have to take into account that the women are cronically malnourished and
underfed in parts of these countries, so ANY additional food they receive
will certainly improve their nutritional status and that of their children.
