Jan and Lynn et al,

Now, I'll agree with you that some babies come out and they're pumped full of pit
so they're edemic so they're slow starters. And some are just slow starters, and
so we shouldn't panic... look at the baby, monitor the diapers. Got it. But what
about mom? If the above 2 scenarios are happening and so we have a disinterested
baby, should we suggest pumping to encourage the milk to come in? I could see
encouraging pumping for a couple of days as 1) you're telling mom that at least
she can do something; 2) you're proving how pro-active mom is going to be about
breastfeeding to any doubting hospital staff; and 3) you're priming the "nummies"
with stimulation. Of course, you need to discourage the idea of dependence on the
pump for the mom if she doesn't plan to use it for any length of time.

Just thinking out loud. Whaddaya think?
