BINGO! 
Whatever instinctual cues the mom is having, or whatever she has learned, it 
didn't work for her.  The BEST position is whatever position you can help her 
find no pain in!

What I end up telling a lot of clients is that LC's just (hopefully) have learned 
a lot of techniques and have acquired a skill for troubleshooting to get you out 
of pain and start having the wonderful experience new motherhood is 
supposed to be - with all the yuckiness and sleepiness that goes with it!
