I'm normally a Lactnet Lurker and not a breastfeeding professional, but
wanted to respond to this anyway.
Would this mother consider an alternative approach? Very
breastfeeding-friendly! My son was at one point on Adderall and also took
Ritilin for his ADHD. The side effects were horrible, which sent me on a
search for non-drug approaches to helping him.
We have found the Feingold Program to be our salvation! You can find
information at http://www.feingold.org. In a nutshell, artificial additives
along with certain offending foods are not consumed. It is an elimination
diet. Followers avoid all artificial dyes, preservatives, flavorings, and
also limit exposure to salycilates. Some also include other allergenic
foods such as wheat/gluten, milk, etc.
At first glance, it seems like a challenge to alter your way of eating -- it
seems drastic. However, with a bit of practice, it's actually quite easy.
For those who prefer the convenience of prepared foods or national brands
commonly found in regular grocery stores, membership includes a shopping
guide by brand name. Others go the organic/natural route by shopping at a
health food store.
It typically takes a couple of weeks for the body to rid itself of
everything causing ADHD symptoms -- however, we noticed an improvement in
attention and behavior within 3 days. At the time we stared this dietary
approach, my son was on methylphenidate in two formulations, one extended
release plus "boosters" of short-acting forms, and was also taking an SSRI
for his anxiety and OCD tendancies. Now? All gone. No meds. None. I
can't say enough about just how much better behaved and focued he is, how
much his self-esteem has soared now that he doesn't see himself as somehow
broken -- and how much healthier we are as a family with all that junk
removed from our diet.
If your client is committed to breastfeeding, she might also be open to yet
another healthier alternative.

Subject: drug question-Adderal
I have searched the archives and checked in Hale. Hale lists Adderall as a
L4. Mom went off medication during her pregnancy, but now has to return to
work with her 6 week old. Her doctor won't prescribe unless she weans, her
pediatrician says she has to wean. She doesn't want to expose her baby to
the
medication, so she respects that weaning may be her only option, but is
wondering if it is possible to manage the medication in a way that allows
her to
continue breastfeeding at least part time. She could use formula while she
is
at work, which is the only time she takes the medication, express and
discard the milk, then return to breastfeeding when she comes home as she
can
actually feel the medication is no longer working. She doesn't want to
wean, she
has to work, she cannot function at work without medication. When I read
the
forums on Hale, I notice the question posed there too and the response.
But, just want to know if others have had any experience with this drug,
and
doctors willing to prescribe to a nursing mother.
