Some of you might appreciate this bittersweet
tribute paid to breastfeeding, received in my
Zimbabwe News alert today. The background is
that the new Prime Minister, who has already
survived four assassination attempts and
imprisonment for trumped-up treason charges
(necessitating relatives to bring food to the
prison, or inmates will literally starve) was
involved in a car accident last Friday, just days
after being sworn in to a fragile Unity
Government. His wife of 31 years was tragically
killed in the accident. The nation mourns. In
his tribute to a much-beloved lady, whom he
describes as 'the mother of the nation', a
prominent politician and close ally of the new PM
had this to say: "[Mr Tsvangirai's] only pillar
of strength has been his wife, Susan, who
provided the food, the comfort and attention
throughout his treason trial… and assassination
attempt ......Throughout his stay in detention in
prisons, she is the one who provided the food
.....She was the mother to our struggle, who
mothered and breastfed that struggle. She was
there when we were beaten up, assaulted."

If you can forgive this rather political post to
LACTNET, I thought you might appreciate, as I do,
that the supreme compliment this loyal colleague
could pay was that Susan "mothered and breastfed"
a political struggle. His words illustrate the
esteem which is accorded to both mothering and
breastfeeding, and consequently to the lady herself. Sweet, huh?
