From some of the reading I have done this issue would appear to be more
complex than just injesting bovine growth hormone.I found a press
release from March 1999 re a study by the European Union Vet Committee
which suggested that this hormone could promote cancer of the breast and
colon. Even if this is disputed there is of course the other issue of
the BGH reducing a cows life expectancy and increasing her risk of
disease. This leads to increased use of antibiotic injections. Residues
of these drugs are in the milk. The milk produced by sick cows has a
higher white cell count. (It might even have pus in it if the mastitis
is bad enough) Fostering even more resistance to antibiotics even
without all the other possible problems would be enough to stop me using
that milk. Thank goodness for our new organic milk source in NZ. We only
get it once a week from the North Island but it's worth waiting for!
