I have a mom, delivered early this am -- 4th baby.  She breastfed her first
and third for 3 weeks each, her second for only a couple of days since it was
only 18 months after her first....

Anyway, she says that about a week after delivery, she starts getting hives
which start immediately after a feed.  They never go away, but get
progressively worse, the longer she is nursing.  They started on her arms,
spread to her legs, chest, abdomen, and back.  Benadryl relieves the itching,
but not the hives.  She finally quit bf both the babies when her throat
started closing up, and she ended up in the ER scared to death and was given
epinephrine.  At that point the hives went away, but she was too scared to
keep on breastfeeding.

She really wants to nurse this baby.  Of course, the only "counsel" she has
had is to (a) don't nurse, or (b) "you're reacting to your hormones.

I suppose it could be an odd response to prolactin....????  I don't think it
would be oxytocin as it doesn't happen during labor or during sex.  But I
don't understand how it could be prolactin either.  Any guesses?

Another of our lactation buddies mentioned something she had read/heard about
a mom who went into anaphylactic shock after breastfeeding (and no, it wasn't
in the National Enquirer!! :>D)  Anybody heard anything about this?

I'm really trying to find out what could possibly cause this, and if there is
any way to forstall it this time.
