Hi Dell,

I have huge pendulous breasts, 48H, and baby self attached and was
sucking before the umbilical cord died. I'd asked for him to be lifted
from between my legs and laid on my chest, and then for everyone to wait
for the cord to die naturally. Completely unexpected that he then
reacted by finding his way onto my nipple and latching perfectly! In
fact, if you look at the Baby Crawl video - the mother has very soft
breasts. Lying on my back, the breasts pool down into themselves, and
the nipple is very accessible for the baby - just like in the video.
http://breastcrawl.org/video.htm Took him about 30 seconds.
And this was after both an induction, and an epidural. My baby just
wanted breast: end of!

'Course, I didn't know that was what was _supposed_ to happen, and the
trouble started when I then tried to 'do it properly'. Bringing baby to
the breast when you can't see your nipples... nightmare. We nearly
killed each other (my husband and I) and the moment I thought "I know,
we'll use a mirror and hubby can shout out directions" was definitely
the lowest point in our relationship - ever. Mirror + stressed new
mother who is dyslexic + hungry newborn + exhausted new Dad =
unmitigated disaster. Still, we laugh about it now....

Had I known, I'd have just stayed semi-reclined and let him get on with
it every single time! :-)

As it was, it took a couple of weeks before I could use the rugby hold
(transitional) on my dominant hand side, and then the cross-cradle on my
non-dominant. And pillows were a must, just to get baby raised up
enough to get above my girth!

As a large breasted mother - I'd say baby led latching is the best way
to go. Gravity makes all other positions much more challenging,
reclined, gravity works to your advantage.
