I just attended the annual conference here of the Society for Perinatal
Medicine and heard a talk by a doc who works with pregnant women with eating
disorders.
His main area of interest at the moment is how oxytocin relates to the
problem of eating disorders. It was fascinating and unfortunately so new
and complicated that I can't explain it, except to say that nothing in his
talk contradicted my very biased opinion that oxytocin is a great little
molecule and we should probably be even more attentive to all the processes
which promote its secretion and those which depend on it. He sees oxytocin
in the context of attachment and of general integration of the organism.
Exciting? You bet!
Watch this space, because when his book comes out I will be reviewing it as
fast as I can get my sticky little fingers on it.
cheers

PS this doc's results were quite good and he reported that the mothers
experienced improved well-being while breastfeeding
