All the recent comments on over-supply and how to down-regulate made me
wonder if there might be cases where it's beneficial to encourage more
supply than is needed?
For example, what about the mom who reports that with previous babies she
was unable to produce enough milk after some period of time? I have several
women who claim this condition in my practice.
Or in my case, since I've always had too short maternity leaves, I
deliberately have started pumping within the first few days after birth to
intentionally produce more than the baby currently needs. That way I get a
freezer stash going, and have a cushion for when my supply inevitably goes
down from working too many hours and not pumping enough. Using this
technique, I have been able to exclusively breastfeed and not supplement
despite some ridiculous working hours during medical school. Of course, I
have never suffered from oversupply or overactive MER, so having extra milk
was never a problem for me. And when I was in medical school the breaks
between quarters provided me with "babymoons" to rebuild supply.
Just wondering if there are any other situations where more extra supply may
be useful.
