Just had a mom for a visit, returned from an trip abroad to Ireland. Travelled via Continental Airlines. This mom is struggling with a baby with poor suck, a biter, history of nipple pain treated with a shield and nystatinetc (by the pediatrician who does not acknowledge that the baby is the cause of low supply). Baby is 8 weeks old. Due to low supply, mom had to pump to bring up supply and was using a Symphony pump. She took her pump on the plane and used it during the flight. Passengers complained to the flight attendant who asked her to wait until the flight was over, which mom refused to do, explaining that her baby needed food. She was sitting in a row completely occupied by her family at the very back of the plane next to the bathroom.
To add insult to injury, when mom reached Newark airport and needed to plug in her pump, there was no plug in the bathroom and the VIP lounge refused to allow her to use a corner and a plug. The Airline people were not helpful. The mom ended up pumping in the middle of the airport next to computer plug-in kiosk, her only option. Ain't it great that we can accommodate laptop users with bad batteries, but not moms in need! I told her to write a letter. We have laws to protect people who need wheelchairs but we don't force everybody else to ride in them, why can't we do the same for mothers who are trying to do the best for their babies in the face of great difficulties?

My rant is over.
