I would like to comment on the LC providing a Haberman for a premie.
It could be useful depending on the baby's feeding issues. The real issue
here is not collaborating with the NICU staff. It sounds like the LC gave
the Haberman to the parents without first having a discussion with the NICU
staff. Professional need to work together and respect each other's
contribution to care of these babies. My experience is that with good
communication, neonatologists, nurses, OTs, LCs etc all have something to
contribute. Without a real discussion with some of these discliplines, the
LC may be working against a feeding plan that is trying to get breastfeeding
going. If the staff is not knowledgable in helping preterms get to the
breast, then the LC can do some great education by being part of the team.
