I think  as a soothing technique within a lifestyle that encourages
mother-baby contact  and responsiveness to feeding cues, it can be perfectly
healthful.  Many  "LLL mothers" are using it alongside sharing sleep, habitual
babywearing,  minimum mother-baby separation, and no clock-watching for
nursing.  In  that case it adds another tool to the toolbox, rather than
substituting for  the closeness and breastfeeding that should be the first line
methods of baby  comfort.
