I work in a hospital with 95% epidural rates which are boasted proudly by
the medical staff. We once had a groups of midwives from Australia who were
aghast at these rates, and the doc who spoke to them could not understand
why. If I ask the moms here if they had a Natural birth, most will say yes,
thinking that Natural means that the baby was born vaginally.
Having read some discussions here about various substances in the epidural
cocktail ( nubain?) I spoke to the head anesthesiologist about doing a study
to see if certain substances would correlate with certain abnormal
breastfeeding behaviors. He is more than willing to do such a study, but
first wants to see research on the various substances that may cause
problems. I am supposed to present a protocol, and he is ready to go ahead
on it.
Has anyone done such a study, or does anyone want to do a multi-center
trial?
If you want to compare observations, we could really do a great study, and
maybe find a compromise which moms could live with, i.e. epidurals which
affect babies less. ( I do not see mothers here ready to give up on
epidurals at all, even if you show them all the information on how harmful
they could be to the birth outcome. )
On the the hand, when I do see the rare baby that WAS born naturally, I
often see similar behavior, so maybe it is not the epidural, but rather
mother-baby-separation which is causing the problems. I am continually
puzzled by the number of babies who just cannot latch, and seem to have no
idea of what to do at the breast.
