The management of our facility is just beginning the Baby Friendly
process and we are thrilled. However, they have also made the decision
that we will not use the reverse syringes for inverted or flat nipples
due to the legal issue that it is equipment not being used for it's
manufactured purpose and that it has been altered. I know we have had
this discussion before on Lactnet, and I have checked the archives, but
I am wondering if anyone has any sure legal advice about their use or
any recent research or articles that would support it--more recent than
the 1993 article in the JHL.

In reality, I use the reverse syringe rarely, but every once in awhile
it is just the thing to get a baby to the breast early on and get that
good latch and feed in so he figures out what to do from that point on.
I hate to see that tool taken away since success in the early days
affects total breastfeeding success.

I am aware of the reasoning that other equipment (gloves and ice, etc.)
is not used for their manufactured purpose, but need some hard research,
legal opinion, or precedence. Lactation people don't seem to have the
luxuray of using equipment differenlty even if it does work and is
actually a help.

Thanks in advance for any info you may have.

Kathleen Sacks, RN, IBCLC
