While shopping online yesterday I accidentally came across the Breastmilk
Alcohol Detection Kit, available at a prominent online website, which tests for
the presence of alcohol in breastmilk which has been expressed onto a special
breastpad. Is this a bigger problem than we imagine? Are there truly that
many women out there drinking and worrying about how much alcohol their
nursing baby is getting that we would need a product to help ease their
minds? I suppose the privacy of the product would appeal to some, as there
is no perceived judgment from a breastpad in a box like there conceivably
would be from a human being asked the question. The site also includes
customer reviews, which, of course, can be faked by the manufacturer; one
of them is from a woman who "brings them to baby showers and is the hit of
the party!" Hurray! Sorry, a little judgment showed through there. But
seriously, you have to wonder about this type of product's reliability. How are
home drug-screen kits viewed by the justice system in our country? This is
basically the same thing. I think anyone in lactation support in the U.S.
should know that this product is out there because it's apparently available
throught the country. (It wasn't readily apparent whether it's available
internationally).
