One other piece of the puzzle here is the issue of time. Many of us who
work in a hospital setting have a limited amount of time to see patients. I
work part-time as a hospital based LC (also have a private practice) and we
are allotted 4-5 hours per day, Mon-Sat to see patients. I am at a pretty
small hospital, but 4-5 hours does not allow much time at all to see 20 or
so patients, especially when compared to my private practice, where I spend
1.5-2 hours with a family. We often have to prioritize and first priority
always goes to those who have expressed an interest in breastfeeding. I
wish I had time to see every family and sit down and discuss their feeding
choices, but that is not the reality of our situation. Unfortunately, our
time restrictions do not really allow for quality care in this area.
