Jessica has told us of her concern with her hospital's new hypoglycemia protocol and her information falling on deaf ears. The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine has a hypoglycemia protocol at http://www.bfmed.org/Media/Files/Protocols/hypoglycemia.pdf. However, it sounds as if even this type of document will not sway her colleagues. Perhaps what is needed is for you to go to your Quality Improvement Department and explain that there is a problem with how hypoglycemia is being handled on your unit and you wish to request that a multidisciplinary team be formed to look at the EVIDENCE. QI projects are data driven which help eliminate the types of reactions from providers that allow non-evidence based interventions to persist.
