After switching off the radio (earlier/later post)I picked up the newspaper.(The
Herald 19th April 1996) It says:
'New research has challengened the theory that breast-feeding babies helps to
boost babies intelligence'
Apparently a study has been done at the Medical Research Council Environmental
Epidemiology Unit at Southampton Umiversity 'to establish whether breast-feeding
has an effect on IQ' (that's what it says here I don't think its the right way
round either)
'Researchers Catherine Gale and Dr Christopher Martyn found there was no
evidence that breastmilk promoted higher intelligence. This contradicts a number
of previous studies comparing the intelligence and visual abilities of children
who were breast-fed with those bottle-fed'
It goes on to say that dummies(pacifiers) are definitely associated with lower
intelligence.'Statistically, dummy use was the strongest predictor of lower
intelligence'.'One theory is that they render infants less receptive to outside
stimuli that might develop their intellect'.
The study seems to be published in Lancet which I do not have access to.
I think perhaps in this case it is possible to use the language differences
between Scotland and North America to full advantage!
