manatees that are rescued by being roped under their flippers sustain

The Charles Turner book on the mammary gland has chapters on a number of
types of mammals, including whales, elephants, manatees, etc. There is a
diagram of a mother manatee nursing, stating that manatees balance
themselves on their tails so they are upright with heads out of the water
and holding their young with their flippers in what looks a little like a
madonna position, giving rise to the suspicion that ancient stories of
mermaids may have grown out of sighting manatees feeding young.
(Remember, that was back in the days before spectacles were invented;-)
