If infants are consistently so irritable that they need to be swaddled
all the time, we need to be looking for reasons.  Are they hungry?  Is
the milk flow too much for them? (this is the main reason for the
"colic"  in the babies I see for excessive crying).  Do they have a
sensory integration deficit, which leads to impaired neurobehavioral
organization?  Are they being parented appropriately?  These issues have
remedies, and the fussy, unhappy baby should be evaluated by physician,
LC, and physical/occupational therapists until the cause is found and fixed.

That being said, specific types of swaddling can be good tools to
enhance organization and muscle tone in babies who need the help.
