Hello, Annette.
I took Effexor for several years, although not while breastfeeding.
However, I could definitely see a risk for affecting milk supply.
Antidepressants can cause dry mouth. Anything that can dry out mucous membranes has the
potential to affect milk supply.
Also, I suffered terrible, bizarre nightmares while on the drug.
Also, terrible snoring--so bad, my poor husband had to move to a different room.
My doc said that many people complained about bizarre nightmares, and it was
just a side effect I had to live with. But while on this drug, I slept 12
hours every day! I often wondered how much of a zombie I would have been if I'd
had to use this drug while I had infants or small children in the house,
because then I would simply not have been able to sleep so much. (I also think I
needed so much sleep because the quality of the sleep itself was so lousy.) And
we know that fatigue can impact a mother's supply.
So while I don't have personal experience with this drug and milk
supply, the experience I do have with it could definitely support possible lowered
milk supply.
