When my son was in preschool, he and a little girl were, I think, the only 3
1/2 year olds still nursing.  The mother of the little girl told me that her
daughter told her:  "Did you know that some children nurse on their thumbs?
I tried it, but it's yucky!"

 My son, BTW, discovered his thumb at two months, sucked it intensely despite
being nursed on demand, and, without any intervention, stopped thumbsucking
