in a message dated Wed, 6 Dec 2000 13:38:32 EST, Katherine Morrison
([log in to unmask]) wrote on 'alternate feeding' that a mother was told:
"at this point, your supply is so low, that
you should only be pumping and bottlefeeding the milk.....he'll use up more
calories than he can take in while nursing.....if he wants more, supplement
with formula"

In the same post, she reports a case of mother being told 'if baby does not
successfuly latch and nurse within the five minutes of the specified feeding
time, give __mls of fomula via bottle'

And then she notes that many women who receive this kind of advice feel that
bottle feeding is less hassle than breastfeeding. Wonder why?

Maybe we could just institute a policy of sticking to measures which can be
instituted while lying in bed, and if these are not enough, then we could
escalate to measures which can be instituted while sitting in a comfy chair.
Only if baby is suffering after these avenues have been pursued, would we
recommend anything requiring standing, walking from room to room, or using
equipment of any kind or purchasing supplies. Then at least the mothers
might have a realistic idea of what is a hassle!
