Hi Laura,
You sound like you are on the right track. It is very important to do
followup until mother feels confident in her bf. It can be very upsetting to
undergo the experience of a hungry baby and a big wt loss, and engorgment.
Obviously.
If the affected breast (lumpectomy) is painful, I would recommend she
express it by whatever method is comfortable and easy for her (hand or
pump), and concentrate on feeding from the unaffected breast. Excellent you
obtained 50 mls and so I predict the baby will gain the weight back fine.
Once mom is comfortable with latching and feeding on that side, she can make
the transition to double sided feeding, and hopefully that breast is feeling
better by then.
I agree with you, I am thinking there was initial latch imperfections, and
this led to frustrated baby and engorged mother. I would also check closely
for tongue tie, as that definitely fits this picture.
