I need some help quickly to try to save breastfeeding for this mother. A 20
year old patient that I saw over the weekend in ICU to help start pumping,
went home yesterday, still unable to breastfeed because of the nipride drip
she had gotten when she was so ill. The MD's cannot find any information on
breastfeeding and nipride (neither can I ). The doctor is concerned that
nitroprusside metabolizes to cyanide, called the company that manufactures
it, and was told not to allow breastfeeding for 3 weeks! They sent a sample
of her milk and serum to a lab to get levels of cyanide, but don't really
know what is a safe level.

Can anyone help me? This is a young mom who does not have money to rent a
pump, not much support from her family for breastfeeding., and lives an hour
away from the hospital. I gave her the number of a WIC clinic that has
loaner pumps near her, but I sure would like to know if this is necessary? I
did search the archives under nipride and nitroprusside.
TIA
