June, I disagree that this baby was not getting enough to eat in the first 24
hours and therefore was not satisfied.
All babies in the first 2 days feel lousy from the birth process and feel
more like vomiting their first meals than to eat large ones. This includes
babies of all sizes and gestational ages.
Mother Nature made colostrum to be small in quantity and a thick fluid for a
reason, to help meet the sugar and energy needs of these newborns while they
recovered from birth. On day one the average intake is 7-10cc total.
I truly believe that each baby goes to breast to meet a thirst need but
mostly for comfort to recover. Some of us need more comfort than others. Some of
us moan more than others and some of us cry more. They all sleep in large
amounts to recover.
I tell parents that these first 2 days is similar to hard labor or
immediately post op or even a bad flu; the body is in an upheaval and is not looking for
large volumes of food. One can get a large amount of formula in these babies
especially the ones who want to suck but their gut is retching for the next 8
hours.
I encourage the Dad to be around to hold and allow the baby to suck if the
Mom cannot tolerate the baby for long periods at the breast. Sometimes the baby
just needs to be held and rocked.
