i have posted before about this, and yes, a mom can breastfeed and take
lithium. however, the best course would be, since she is off it right now
anyway, for her to try one of the other less difficult drugs and see if her
symptoms can be managed well by them. dr. hale's book about clinical therapy
in breastfeeding patients is required reading! see pg. 39 (hint, hint).

using the lithium requires careful occasional testing of blood lithium levels
in baby (and should be in mother as well) and education of the mother.
