Our new temporary living conditions in Australia mean that I'm currently
reading Lactnet in between my twin sons who have their computers set up on
either side of me. Consequently, as I occasionally erupt and read out
aloud some of the more provocative Lactnet excerpts (!!) they have been
the recent recipients of information on Comfort Proteins. One of them
mentioned that in *their* field, computers, there are websites where
computer products are listed and compared, one against another, to evaluate
components and compare benchmark products. He asked why *we* don't set up
a website to compare various commercially manufactured formulas against
breastmilk (the gold standard) which parents could visit, so that they
could know what was in breastmilk and what was, or wasn't, in the various
formulas. The other suggested that such a site could be called
Lactech. Think about it - we have Lactnet, and Lactnews - why not
Lactech? I pricked up my ears and asked for more info - specifically how
contributors to the Information Technology sites don't get sued etc.

It appears that the information on these sites is based on factual
information only, ie commercially available products with proven scientific
analysis - data and research that can be repeated by reproduction of the
experiment. There are comparisons such as performance evaluations and
features, tables, value analyses and graphs, aesthetic qualities, numerical
data, information on cost, sections where products are compared in a
certain price range, and narrative. Evaluations state what are considered
to be the best available products - usually comparing the two best/most
popular products - and they have buyer's choice awards, updated as new
products appear, and new reviews are completed regularly.

Does such a site exist comparing breastmilk with the other
alternatives? The research on breastmilk exists. Think how influential
such a website could be for parents and others seeking to compare
breastmilk with breastmilk substitutes. A link to the ILCA website,
perhaps? Any offers, anyone? The boys want no intellectual recognition
for this "idea".
