Dear Friends:
Before 1981, when HIV and AIDS were officially recognized,
this practice was not considered to be hazardous. Nowadays, we who know about such things have a responsibility to inform our clients about the risks.
I am thinking of a case in Utah, where a Mormon married woman turned up with AIDS. Her husband was bi-sexual; he never told anyone because he would have been ostracized in his community.
It is too bad that we humans have corrupted the heretofore universal practice of cross nursing. While the practice may never die, it can't be universally condoned either.
I didn't know, when I nursed my neighbor's baby while she went for a job interview, that she had herpes. I remember feeling secretly glad that my baby refused to nurse from her.
  warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE
