Hi Chris and Zena

In the Western Cape we actually have a separate KMC provincial policy that
applies to ALL babies! (No prizes for guessing where Nils Bergman lives!)
We also have a National Bf Policy that talks about skin to skin until the
first spontaneous breastfeed. But .... having a policy on paper is only
the beginning. The concept is spreading slowly. I teach Skin to Skin to
parents and health professionals at every opportunity. I believe it goes
hand in hand with breastfeeding.

The unit where I work had a 100% caesarean rate last week (and we were
full). Babies go to their mothers within one hour and are naked except for
a diaper. Thereafter, any baby who is not feeding well is placed skin to
skin. If there seems to be a problem with bonding then skin to skin does
its magic - especially when baby turns his head and makes eye contact. Only
once have I had a mother who was repulsed at the idea.

Mothers who elect to bottle feed from birth are usually taken a fully
clothed baby. I would be interested to hear what others do in a bottle
feeding situation.
