Dear Friends:
Liz wonders about balancing a mother's tolerance for information with
the goal of increasing supply.
So many variables to consider here (surprise, surprise ;-)
How far away from the delivery of the placenta is she? Is she pumping
enough with a hospital grade pump? Is her supply slowing increasing, staying
the same, or not there at all? Is baby able to snuggle skin-to-skin? Can she
do any visualizations or affirmations ( shown in one study using a relaxation
tape to increase supply)? Any barriers in the way: more than one baby,
children of different needs and ages, family support, breast structures all
present and working, her commitment to breastfeeding? How long has she been
pumping well? If for a while, and her commitment is waning, then it might be
time to introduce the idea of galactagogues.
I am sure other LACTfriends can think of more.
Sometimes all mom can handle is one new thing at a time. Other times,
moms are eager to do it all. One could always ask the mother what she would
like to do.
Liz, there is one solution. The on-going dialogue between LC and client
will provide an answer.
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE
