Can we as a group come up with a statement to make to moms about the
SIDS study so that we are still evidence-based, given the new evidence?

I have to face a new group of mothers tomorrow morning and I don't know
how to present these subjects without being accused of not being
evidence-based. How about mentioning that there is a new AAP
recommendation which says that among the ways to help decrease the risk
of SIDS, in addition to breastfeeding, mothers should remove all toys
and pillows from the baby's bed, not overheat the environment, stop
smoking, use pacifiers once breastfeeding has been well-established,
place babies on their backs to sleep, keep babies by the parents bed
until at least age 6 months , etc. This way, the emphasis is not on the
pacifiers. One could also add that trying only one of these
recommendations is not enough, but that the press has emphasized only
crib sleeping and pacifier use. Then make the mothers stop and think
about these recommendations and hopefully come to some conclusions
themselves.
Here in Israel, the daily press had huge headlines yesterday that
pacifiers will prevent SIDS, so I will have to address the issue. I
want to make sure that we are all saying the same thing.
