I recently read an article that said new research is suggesting that a
bacteria called Helicobacter pylori is responsible for some portion of SIDS
cases. This bacteria causes an inflammatory response in the immune system
which leads eventually to respiratory arrest. The researchers suggestion for
prevention was keeping babies on their backs, cleanliness--especially proper
cleaning of baby bottles! This research is in November's Archives of Disease
in Childhood (according to the article at the web site for the Baby Center).

Interestingly, there is a patent that addresses the helicobacter pylori
problem by using human lactoferrin. It will be a vaccine. Great eh? Another
vaccine, like the rotavirus vaccine that would not be needed, if infants were
exclusively breastfed. There are a number of patents that connect infant
formula usage to SIDS. I think the patents ought to be put in those "Gift
Bags" instead of infant formula sponsored information that.. oops forgot to
mention breastfeeding. Valerie W. McClain

Helicobacter lactoferrin receptor

Abstract
The prevention and treatment of gastric infections caused by the bacterium
Helicobacter are disclosed. A newly identified cell-surface protein purified
from Helicobacter, and the use thereof as a vaccine, are also disclosed. Said
protein is able to bind to human lactoferrin.
