Hi Heidi,
Puncture wounds do heal, it can just take more time in a lactating breast. Reducing the milk flow through the wound can help. Frequent bf and perhaps covering the wound with a transparent polyethylene film dressing such as tegaderm can help.

Subject: Leakage after punction

Dear colleagues,
Allow me to ask your opinion:
I got a question from a mom, ptp, who is breastfeeding her 4,5 month old baby girl. Everything is going well. No questions there.
This mother has had a breast punction at her left breast, lower outer quadrant. There has been leaking milk out since. She has been told that this 'wound' will not heal, ever, and in order to stop the leaking and make sure nothing else will appear on the spot, she will have to stop breastfeeding.

I have never heard of this before, but is there such a big difference in this procedure and for example a drain for abces? Those wounds heal as well, don't they?

The mother really would like to continue breastfeeding, this is her fourth child and the first to be fully breastfed.

I offered her to ask for input. What is your opinion on this? There can be the opportunity of continuing with just the other breast, but if there is no need to stop lactating on this breast, why would she.

Please advice!

Warm regards,
Heidi Akkers,
Just renewed IBCLC in pp in the Netherlands
