What bothers me about the new scope of practice is how poorly it is 
written and how many grammatical errors this has (first sentence 
"specialised" is misspelled). It looks like it was not edited. Maybe in 
a hurry? I know that sounds picky and mean but here is what is wrong on 
the copy I downloaded from the web site.

Under IBCLCs are able to -- two sentences are missing periods at the 
end. And the sentences that say "provide evidence based information 
regarding the mother's use of medications (over the counter and 
prescription) while lactating: impact on mother's milk supply." This is 
poorly written and why did they use this mark : to continue the 
sentence? Also, this same sentence structure is used to say.... 
"regarding alternative therapies while lactating: impact on mother's 
milk supply and the effect on her infant."

Frankly, this sentence structure is unclear as to what it means.

And while it is clear that we could read or give written information 
that is evidence based on medications or alternative therapies, it does 
not say we could give mothers evidence based information that might be 
different from what her doctor says. So if she has gotten out dated 
information from her doctor, it appears we can not give evidence based 
information from such sources as the BAB, etc. This conflicts with how 
the role incorporates: "education of women, families, health care 
professionals and the community about breastfeeding and lactation." It 
appears we can not correct bad or dangerous information given to mothers 
by a HCP or nurse at the hospital. This is the really scary part for me.

The other thing that is confusing about this paper, is it says at the 
top that the role incorporates "provision of holistic, evidence based 
lactation support and care to women...." Holistic means using more than 
just main stream medicine, doesn't it? Yet alternative therapies which 
the holistic doctors I am familiar with use, can not be recommended by 
the IBCLC.
