My 4 month old nurses pretty much every hour (anywhere form 5 - 15 minutes)
during the day and after his evening bath, he nurses off & on for the better
part of an hour or two. I do not use a pacifier. Any time he fusses, even
if he's just nursed, I offer the breast. Sometimes he just nuzzles for
comfort. I've got Liam in my lap right now and for the past half hour have
had my breast exposed and I've just moved him to the left side so my right
breast can get a break! He's teething and is going back & forth between
nursing and chewing on his hand. He's happy just lying in my lap and having
his nummies right there. Every few minutes he looks up at me and smiles.
He is a big baby (about 20 lbs) but he's big boned and is solid so I don't
see any problem with his frequent eating; he's grazes just like his mum.

Someone mentioned being an NICU nurse and noted the use of pacifiers in the
ward... Liam was in NICU for 10 days. I indicated that Liam was not to be
given a pacifier. I'm lucky that Liam is a good baby and didn't fuss while
in NICU and they only gave him a pacifier once - for 2 minutes while they
did the hearing test; they needed him to stay still and he moves around in
his sleep a lot.

That's just one mum's outlook.
