Recently, a few NICU nurses went to a conference in Boston, MA and learned a
great deal about mothers storing breastmilk labeled fore milk, hind milk,
composition milk etc. and then giving the premies with poor weight gain only
hind milk. Our NICU trialed this with two premies. They had the mothers
separate and label all of their breastmilk. Then fed these two babies just
hind milk for almost two weeks. They found that the babies triglycerides
became elevated and stopped the hind milk. The babies did gain weight nicely
while on hind milk only. Does anyone have experience with using hind milk
with premies? Have you found elevated triglycerides? High protein levels?
The NICU team would like to use this approach with low weight gainers but we
need more information. Does anyone know where I can find some references for
this practice? Does anyone have a policy/protocol written for hind milk use
in slow gainers? Also, does anyone have a reference for storing breastmilk
for 48 hours in the refrigerator? Thanks for you help.
