Fellow lactnetters, below is a problem which I have not heard before, and
wonder if any of you know about this, and more importantly, what to do about
it. This question is from another list-serve I participate in. So if you
answer, could you give me permission to share it on the list?
Michelle Scott, MA, RD, IBCLC in NH

We are having some difficulty with hypoglycemia in our tiniest babies on
breast milk. It seems to mostly be occuring in our SGA babies. We have been
adding polycose to the breast milk to get them off of TPN or IV fluids. But
when we try to switch from polycose to HMF their sugars bottom out again.
Our neos don't like to start HMF until they are tolerating full feeds. The
neos think the breast milk is lacking in something to keep the babies sugar
up. I'm skeptical. But the neos wanted me to see if anyone was analyzing
breast milk, particularly for CHO, Pro and Fat. Any help you guys can offer
is appreciated.
