Terry, I would put this baby skin to skin with his mother (mother
semi-reclining and well supported with pillows) and leave him there. The
bobbing around you describe is just part of the process of finding and
latching. This baby has been through a lot already - sounds like there were
repeated ultrasounds and then a C-section. He needs time and patience to
recover from the birth, and he needs to be skin to skin with his mother as
much as possible in order to recover and find his own way to the breast.

If he doesn't take the breast, don't push him. If he needs to feed, give him
some expressed colostrum with a spoon or an eyedropper or a syringe. He
doesn't need much at this stage anyway. Be patient. Reassure the mother that
babies are hard-wired to breastfeed, that he'll get it when he's ready, she
just needs to maintain her milk production with some hand-expression at this
point, and let him feel relaxed and happy as he lies against her body.
