I sure hope this mother misunderstood her GI. To be allergic to human
protein would certainly create more problems than
just EE for this infant.
Esophageal Esophagitis is usually of an allergic origin. When breastfed
it comes from something in the maternal diet.
The primary suspect is cow's milk. Whether it be to cow's milk casein
or
cow's milk whey is irrelevant. I have had one infant with this
diagnosis
who was allergic to gluten. This infant did not respond to zantac
but did beautiful on prevacid. THe GI said that EE often doesn't
respond to H2 blockers.
This mother also found that using Pancrease MT 4; 2 tabs with meals and
one with snacks, improved
his pain level. The mother takes the pancrease not the infant.
This mother should not stop breastfeeding as these are allergic kids
and they need the properties of human milk to strengthen their immune
system. They are susceptible to other allergic conditions as well
like asthma and eczema both conditions human milk improves or prevents.

WIth EE (or colic and reflux for that matter) I always take a careful
family history of maternal and paternal
dietary allergies. I want to know about siblings, nieces and
grandparents as well. The kid with the gluten
issue had a grandfather allergic to wheat. So if thinking wheat, think
gluten as well.
I then have the mother take out cow's milk, nuts and anything uncovered
by the family history.
