In response to the many posts on sleep positions:
At the ILCA 2003 conference in Sydney, Pam Heselev did a presentation on
babies who need special exercises for muscle tone, etc., some of whom are
babies who have never had tummy time. Early this year she came up here to
do a one-day workshop here in Brisbane for the Southside/Logan Breastfeeding
Coalition.
One of the many strategies she talked about, and which some who've posted
on Lactnet have mentioned, is encouraging parents to carry their babies in
positions where they don't have the back of the head against a surface, and
they can learn to lift and move their heads and use muscles they don't use
when lying on their backs. E.g. facing outwards, or held along the parent's
arm on their tummies. So easy, but parents with no prior experience of
babies, and scared of having babies any way except on their backs, need
showing how to. A nice bit of prevention of flattened heads, along with
supervised tummy play on the floor.
The UK BFI people have printed information on safe co-sleeping, specially
for breastfeeding women who bed-share with a baby. There is an Australian
version in leaflet form, too, called "Is your baby sleeping safely?" I
obtained my copies from the Australian Breastfeeding Association's local
office.
I'm nomail now, and so any responses need to come to me privately.
