As regards the subject of hypoglycemia and breastmilk: if these little
ones are in the NICU and are scheduled Q3 hr feeds, then it is something
I have experienced also. Especially the IUGR babies or babies who were
getting lots of formula (60 ml or more) at a feeding and now switch to
breast milk. We need to remember the digestion of breast milk is faster
and babies just learning to hold their temp and blood sugars need
frequent feeds. They still may be getting treatments which use up their
energy and may not have brown fat storage to help with temp control. I
found , with the neonatologists permission, that Q 2 hr feedings for
24-48 hours helped them stabilize to straight breast milk and then they
could often go longer once their bodies acclimated. Also making sure
they got the hind milk. If they're on breastfeeding , they may not have
the endurance to pull out all the milk they need. So a little
lactoengineering goes a long way to increase weight gain and hold blood
sugars.
