Wanted to respond to Jeanette's story about working with PHN's doing home
visits. I have the good fortune of working for a hospital who hired me to
set up a home visit program for new mothers. I work out of the birthing
area, and am happy to say that between 90-95% of our mothers receive home
visits. I also coordinate the lactation service here, and all of my hv
nurses have attended Debbie Bocar's Breastfeeding Educator Certification
course. In fact, I published an article in Home Health Nurse regarding some
of the outcomes we discovered in our first year. One of the things we found
was the hv nurses spent most of the visit on breastfeeding issues. So, I
proposed that they all become certified in bf education, and the hospital
supported me! If I may say so, I think we have an excellent program! The
hv nurses refer any mothers with bf problems back to me, and I am able to
follow them! Hope to publish another article on this topic in the same
journal in the future to spread bf knowledge to this group of nurses. If
anyone is interested in the reference of this article, let me know.
