RE Breastfeeding in PACU
In our Birthing Center, mothers are admitted to a labor room to be prepped
for their C/S (low C/S rate 10-20%). They then go to our own O/R (within the
Birthing Center) for their C/S. Baby is assessed on a warmer in the OR, VS
taken, then bundled and held by parents. Never leaves unless a health issue
arises. Then both go back to the labor room the mom was originally in, for
recovery together. There, the baby and mother are recovered. Baby's meds,
measurements, weight, etc. are done. Our maternity staff does the admit,
prep, circulating, and recovery. All our nurses are lactation trained as
part of Baby-Friendly. All our nurses also do baby assessments. Baby goes
STS and to breast as soon as a set of maternal VS are obtained upon arrival
in the labor - now recovery - room. (These rooms are actually our LDR's -
moms labor, deliver, and recover in these same rooms). When recovery is
complete, both go together to their postpartum room. No separation. Same
floor, same department, same room.
