Another route to think about:  A woman I know nearly lost her son to ftt
before the doctors thought of testing the poor baby for giardia, which turned
out to be the problem.    Everybody assumed that because he was exclusively
bf he couldn't have a parasite infection.  But it eventually became clear
that the mother had visited a home in which the well water used for BATHING
had been infested -- apparently the baby literally licked it off her skin.
This baby stopped gaining at 6 months, and was over a year and at death's
door -- having been tested for every metabolic disorder in the book -- before
they figured out what he had.
