Guilt??? The mother of smokescreens that cancels any rational discussion of
the issues of infant feeding. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC

Why is it so difficult for all American health care providers to say this to
all new moms?:
After birthing your baby, the most important thing you can give your baby is
YOU, the
colostrum YOU produce, the milk YOU produce. We will support YOU to that
goal.

I agree with Valerie the whole guilt discussion is a smokescreen. It is
because there is a conflict of interest as to whose cause health care
providers are beholden to:
A. the mothers and newborns whose insurance dollars they take in payment
versus
B. the formula companies, whose loss leader* (in the case of WIC) and free
formula and adjunct products hospital administrators accept-along with all
the grants and monetary donations to the AAP and ADA, which is out and out
bribery.
C. Plus, there is always a binding contract written in the favor of the
formula companies, that ties the health care providers hands. It is a
proverbial deal with the devil--administrators get lots of stuff for nothing
and moms/babies are sold out.

Most pregnant women have not a clue what is going on in the background
controlling what options will be presented to them. At least midwives in
our area do not choose to be detailed by formula companies and are not
compromised. Plus, they do routine day 2, day 4 mom/baby visits along with
any more that are needed in addition to routine visits. There is way more
service for the contracted amount insurance pays for the birth, plus
midwives will willingly write a referral to an IBCLC that will be paid for
by many insurance companies. Then again this is Washington State with the
accredited Seattle Midwifery School.
