Assuming that the issue here is in fact allergies, the mother should consider 
removing corn and corn products from her diet.  Corn is more pervasive even 
than dairy and soy, so often easier said than done, but it is a fairly "hard core" 
allergen.  

I'd also suggest seeking out adult and child allergy support sites.  There are 
some really experts out there on elimination diets.  As much as it can be 
difficult, it is preferable to cut out all of the major allergens, then add them 
back one at a time, rather than cut one out at a time since often more than 
one allergen is at work.
