I tried to thank you individually for your helpful comments on the dad with
some bonding issues, but may have missed some of you. Thank you! I've
talked with the mother almost daily and she's had a very stressful week with
her dh out of town and her mother in town (a bad relationship at best).
Baby wanted to nurse every hour (stress-related) and she was in tears last
night. Dad seemed reluctant to have baby in bed, so I was hesitant to
recommend that so that Mom could get sleep. We talked through some coping
strategies and I reinforced her responsiveness to her little one. She's
getting all of the "put that baby down" comments, etc. and is feeling quite
inadequate. WELL...she called this morning ecstatic. Her mother left this
morning *and* last night she asked her dh to move the bassinet close to
their bed for easier nursing. Dad said, "Why don't you just bring him into
our bed? Wouldn't that be easiest?" All of them got sleep, all of them had
a wonderful night and she is on Cloud 10 today. They talked about it and it
came out that his view of attachment parenting is only that of
"extremes"...nursing 10-year olds and no intimacy with his wife in their own
bed, etc. They also had a great discussion about the "real normal and
natural" versus the "societal norms". Yeah! With her returning to work
when Baby is 6 weeks old, I am delighted that this transition is occurring.
Who knows what the magic bullet was, but I am very encouraged.

It seems as if we always have those problems and negative situations, so I
hope your Leap Year weekend has something encouraging from this story.
Thank you for all of your help and reinforcement of my approach.

Warmly,
Rebecca DeYoung Daniels, MBA, RD, LD, IBCLC
