<<My other ? is one of the nurses I work with told me one of the nurse
practitioners she spoke with recently attended a conference in which it is
being recommended that baby's NOT sleep with their parents because of
increased risk of SIDS. Has this been put into an official statement? I
will be speaking to her and the staff of the clinic
where she works next week and I know she will ask about it. Thanks for the
info.

I am wondering about this too with the release of the recent report that
suggested the real culprit in SIDS is that when baby breathes, the exhaled
carbon dioxide is trapped in blankets, etc. (thus the lower rate in warmer
countries) and it is the re-breathing of the carbon dioxide that may cause
the problem. The doctor I heard discussing this on the radio went on to say
that is why back-sleeping is so important. Is the baby who co-sleeps at
higher risk because of the parents? In an article on Biocultural Perspectives
in Breastfeeding (LLL web site--April, I think), the author suggested that
the carbon dioxide exhaled by the parents in co-sleeping may help prevent
SIDS. Seems like contradictory statements---would really like the thoughts of
all of you on this. Thanks!
